Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is a bushy, three-foot high perennial or biennial herb with hairy green leaves in the shape of a heart. Its small blue flowers bloom along a sturdy stalk and make an eye-catching display in the garden.  Clary Sage is native to the Mediterranean region and the herb’s prominent place in folk medicine has earned it the alternate names “Clear Eye”, “Bright Eye”, and “Clary Wort”.

 

This therapeutic quality pure essential oil is cultivated in France and extracted by steam distillation of the fresh flowers, never from the lower leaves. Some companies sell oils that have been distilled from the tops plus the lower leaves; these are inferior products that are not suitable for aromatherapy.

 

Good Clary Sage essential oil has a powerful aroma that is sweet and floral, nutty and herbaceous. Aromatically, it combines very well with Bergamot, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Fennel, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Juniper, Lavender, Pine, Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Citrus oils.
